Regarding the artcle about

Regarding the artcle about the arrest in our county of some person growing marijuana, a plant that can not kill you with overdose like one night with alcohol can I have a comment.A Police Chief of a large town co-authored a book " Marijuana is Safer, Why are we driving people to drink". Many police support the group "Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (WWW.LEAP.CC)and as an old RN with 2 decades work in Detox/Rehab I agree with this police Chief quote: ""Like an increasing number of law enforcers, I have learned that most bad things about marijuana — especially the violence made inevitable by an obscenely profitable black market — are caused by the prohibition, not by the plant," retired San Jose police chief Joseph McNamara wrote in a recent op-ed for The San Francisco Chronicle

The road crews worked before

The road crews worked before the holiday on off-the-road projects, so the impact to the holiday travel was lessened. That was thoughtful.

Last week I heard of one traveler who went through the construction, and was told that even though the road is open it is better to go around if at all possible. The more traffic that goes through, the slower the crews have to work. You don't want to be in the way of the project getting done.

Today our newspaper delivery driver called one of the three women who are keeping tabs on the project. He was given permission to travel through the construction. The speed limit is 30 miles per hour for the 20 miles of construction, so remember that as you are making your travel plans.

I went to International

I went to International Falls on Saturday, through Canada. The ride was quick, but we waited for more than 30 minutes to cross the bridge back into Minnesota. And we weren't at the end of the line. I bet some people were in line more than 90 minutes. The actual border crossing was easy, with our passports and driver's licenses. We crossed at about 10 Saturday morning.

On the way home we came on Highway 11 Sunday afternoon. There are several places where the blacktop is scraped off, so it is slow traveling. They were burning piles of branches and stumps, but not much else was going on.

What are you seeing on your travels?

In response to Mr. Eaton's

In response to Mr. Eaton's letter (An Example of Management):

Does Eaton really expect his comments to be taken seriously? Ask this - Is there any evidence to substantiate his claim that the school's response is in "retaliation"? If not, perhaps he ought not insinuate such. How about this - Was there no responsibility on Eaton's part for this incident ultimately ending up in court? Or how about...Does Eaton have a personal and direct monetary interest in this school contract situation...one that he conveniently omits from his letter? One more... Is this the same Mr. Eaton who attempted to have all school board members elected "at large", thereby eliminating true representation for the majority of school district residents?

Eaton seems to take some satisfaction in knowing that the school lost money in his legal case. Indicative of motivation is his obvious attempt to call into question the character, motives and attitudes of current school administration, while appearing to hold himself above the fray, so to speak. (The old "I didn't do it, he did!" scenario.) I don't buy it, and I doubt very many others will, either. After all, it does take both sides to agree or disagree, something Eaton may have learned from a teacher, somewhere in his past.

As an absentee property owner and taxpayer, I do take great interest in what is happening back home. Eaton says he is curious about how taxpayers feel. Alright, you have asked. I have never met the current superintendent, nor do I believe he needs me to defend him. On an interpersonal level, I have no dog in this fight. However, what I believe as a taxpayer, and what I see from this distance, is that a whole lot of upstaging, pettiness, whining and foolishness has crept into the teacher contract negotiations. The agitating, hyberbole and downright silly behavior exhibited by Mr. Eaton, and others, does little to help that situation, but rather is detrimental to a successful conclusion.

Here is some unsolicited advice for Eaton...Anyone can see you are engaged in a personal battle, and many folks are tired of hearing you whine. If all you intend is to engage in petty bickering and character assassination, do us a favor... keep it to yourself. You are not helping anyone, least of all the citizens and taxpayers of L.O.W. County!

One tired taxpayer,

Having served as an elected

Having served as an elected official in another community, I am aware of the time commitment an elected position takes. By filing for office it demonstrates your commitment to the position for which you will run. The hardest part of transitioning to an elected position is that as a commissioner, councilor or board member you still only have one vote and the majority rules.

I have yet to work with an elected official who didn't work for the greater good of the constituents in the jurisdiction they serve. Decision making is not easy when you know that such decisions impact people's lives. The good news is that, as an elected official, you are not alone and the collective knowledge of the elected officials for a jurisdiction really do serve the best interest of the largest majority of constituents.

We need committed individuals to run for public office as a public service to our community. It will be challenging at first but can evolve into the most rewarding experience you may have in your life. It's knowing that you made a contribution to your neighbor's well-being.

I also appreciated the comments in the opinion piece, "This Year Is Your Chance To File." Thank you for encouraging our citizens to run for office.

The late fees for ANI's

The late fees for ANI's utility bill with the City of Baudette are cumulative, not monthly as reported above. Fees are roughly $2,500 per month and had amounted to about $8,000 at the time of the meeting.

Baudette-Lake of the Woods Chamber of Commerce President Mike Hovde called yesterday to say that when the Chamber hosted the beer gardens at Oktoberfest last year, the Chamber and Oktoberfest committee shared in both the expenses and the profits. Oktoberfest paid 75% of expenses and got 75% of the profit. The Chamber paid 25% of expenses and got 25% of the profit.

Mark Dayton is not "the" DFL candidate running for governor. There are a lot of good DFL candidates who are running. They also include Matt Entenza, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, John Marty, Paul Thissen, R. T. Rybak and Susan Gaertner. The DFL endorsement will be decided on April 24 at the DFL State Convention in Duluth. Mark Dayton is bypassing the endorsement and will go straight to the Primary.

Governor blocks

93buster

Governor blocks school funding

If Anzelc could see beyond his MEA union supporters, he would understand that this state has spent vast amounts of money in education with little accountability and only modest results. His answer is and has been to simply throw more money at school districts and everything will be better. It hasn't worked in decades past and will likely not improve with an infusion of federal tax dollars. I applaud the Governor for not simply capitulating to the unions "more money will fix everything" philosphy. It is past time for proportional results for tax dollars spent.

"The Misguided Ripple

"The Misguided Ripple Effect" in this weeks letter to editor said it well about efforts of the Church to make legislation for the private life of people. We are seing two growing and vocal groups in our country, those wanting to use the rule of law to force their spiritual beliefs on others and people who support our consitution and wish to keep separation of religion and state. I'd love to see both sides spend some time looking at our nations military war costs, our nations lack of health care and a health care system where everyone pays a different price and the uninsured pay the highest,or how about the failed 30 year old war on drugs where drugs are more available and gangs/cartels have gotten rich and drug addicts(alcohol, tobacco,RX and street drugs) requesting treatment are often denied that due to the cost!

Regarding the Church request

Regarding the Church request to change the law to make Baudette "pornography free...to make it clear we value our children and the blessings of marriage..." Our nations past hundred years has shown without any doubts that prohibitions are not effective ways to change behavior....examples include the alcohol prohibition from 16 January 1919 to 5 December 1933; during this time use increased....and most recently our nations 30 year old war on drugs has shown itself to be a failure; drugs are cheaper and more available while gangs got rich and deaths to cops and others are still on the increase due to this prohibition.....but maybe a change in behavior is not what the Church wants? Whatever the Church wants I suggest it should not be done by rule of law, as Church and State should remain separate and in fact the right to freedom of religion is so central to American democracy that it was enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution....and as for CENSORSHIP which is what this Church request is about I see that too as the Church wanting to be part of the state....I wonder has the Church tried to outlaw alcohol or how about tobacco and how do those drugs effect the family? My point is I hope the city supports the constitution of the United States.

I attended the meeting in October and stated at that time I think it is an exciting idea, it is fun to talk about advertising and new concepts, but is not likely to produce the expected result. Today, I still do not think it will produce the type of results people wish to see and is very expensive. I also do not believe that changing people’s attitudes with T shirts and hats is appropriate. Basically that type of so called marketing makes a statement that you will continue to give with nothing returned. Those free gifts will become more expensive in the future.

These marketing efforts will be directly competing with current tourism efforts. Ads will be confused with tourism ads which are more likely to create a mixed signal on Lake of the Woods. Additionally to say that Lake of the Woods would be the first to do this type of marketing is not true. There are communities all across the country trying to compete for the same thing. I believe that growth can come from working with what we have, we need to begin to create and develope from within the community.

I keep hearing about all the

I keep hearing about all the threat of a strike at LOW. Has this ever occured before? There are too many people that are connected and depend on that school for a way to provide for their families. I understand that this is a small district but shouldnt more emphasis be put upon our worthless school board to come to some kind of middle ground with the teachers union. Who is running the school board? Arent the board members suppose to be representing the citizens of the county in which their/our children attend school at. How much do we value education? If Mr."I have been fired/released from Warroad School district but am good enough to somehow get an extension here. Mr Wymore and the board at LOW schools cant figure a way to find some resolve we are going to continue to lose great teachers and eventually lose the ability to have a functioning school. I am not an expert on much but dont employees have to accomplish big things and have success to "earn" extensions. It will be amazing to see what all the businesses and families that are not directly connected with the school will say when a strike does occur and people have to cut back and not go out to eat and instead of their children are at school they are going to have to pay out of their pockets for day-care. Think of all the businesses that will feel the pinch. All because of an ego driven super with a fair share of the board members that represent us all to scared of their own shadows to look out for the better of Lake of the Woods School District. Come on People... This will hurt us all if we all dont speak up and be heard. It seems no ones cares but you will all care soon enough if nobody will stick up for the educators of LOW.
