Indus School receives fresh fruit and vegetable grant

Indus School, Birchdale, recently received notification from the Minnesota Department of Education that a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant in the amount of $5,925 has been awarded to the school for the 2010-2011 school year.The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools during the school day, separate from the federal breakfast and school lunch programs.



Grazing Workshop held

Giziibii Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) hosted a free grazing workshop on August 24.  This workshop was held at the Tom Olson Farm in Graceton, Minnesota from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Mark Hayek, Natural Resources Conservation Service Grazing specialist, facilitated this hands on workshop.  The goal of the workshop was to provide information on forage quantity, quality and productivity to current and potential grazers.

The Depot Preservation Alliance (DPA) needs your help!  To be more specific, we need your thoughts and opinions.  The plan for the preservation and reuse of the Baudette Depot includes four components: a second story apartment, small business rental space, a historic transportation and settlement exhibit, and an artisans’ marketplace (the AM@D).  The Artisans’ Marketplace is still in the planning stage, and this is where your ideas and opinions are most welcome.

Families who have children with medical needs are welcome to visit with representatives from the Shriners International service organization September 18th. A special open house will be Saturday at 6 p.m. for dinner and fellowship. Sportsman’s is offering a prime rib dinner special from 6 to 10 p.m., and reservations are recommended at 634-1342.A group of Shriners will be staying at Sportsman’s Lodge that day and are interested in meeting with current Shriners members and the public about what they can do for families in need. This is not a fund-raising event.

Vivian Elizabeth Olson, 87

She was cared for by her family with assistance from hospice.Vivian was born Nov. 13, 1922, in Bismarck, N.D., to Luther and Nora Carlson. She was the second of two daughters. After her birth, they returned to their farm home in Lehr, N.D.

The hotline of the new National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID VET (1-877-424-3838) will provide homeless veterans with timely assistance and coordinated access to VA and community services. Family members, workers at community agencies and non-VA providers also may call the hotline to find out about the many programs and services available to assist homeless veterans.

The fact is I said not one personal thing in my letter about you, but because you cannot accept professional criticism you took it personal and launched an attack against me. What  journalism class did you learn that in?  Listen carefully. We are talking about a Constitutional right here. The people expect the letter to the editor sections to be free and fair.



Taking a week off for vacation

The Baudette Region will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 8 through Tuesday, Sept. 14. Many have asked why we will be closed, and the answer is that we are taking some staff time off.We have three full-time employees at this newspaper. A while ago, our editor Penny Mio had planned a vacation for after Labor Day weekend.

Border Bounders make return trip to Ragnar Relay

Last year, local runners and coaches Sariina Kalli and Becky Mollberg pulled together a team to run a 193-mile relay from Winona to Minneapolis. The Border Bounders team loved the Ragnar Relay experience so much, Kalli signed them up to run it again. This year’s team was made up of a new mix of runners, yet finished the race in 27 hours, 27 minutes. The Border Bounders were 75th of 286 teams in the fifth year of the Great River race. The average pace of the team was 8:36.

A virulent strain of Newcastle Disease is responsible for the death of nearly 1,000 gulls and 500 cormorants in Minnesota this summer.
The specific strain of Newcastle Disease was confirmed this week by the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis.
The practical implication of this finding is that Minnesota poultry producers should practice sound biosecurity procedures, including the monitoring of their poultry flocks for signs of illness and taking steps to prevent wild birds from having contact with their flocks.
